Origins and development

Josef Durm designed the park cemetery, which opened in 1874. The entrance ensemble is an early example of Renaissance Revival architecture in Baden; the historic crematorium began operating in 1904.

Origins: 1874. The cemetery is in Oststadt / Rintheim, at Haid-und-Neu-Straße 39, 76131 Karlsruhe. Its area is approximately 34 hectares.

Design and present-day character

An early municipal park cemetery with curving plane-tree avenues, a monumental entrance ensemble, large and small chapels, historic crematoria and varied special burial sections.

Read this character description together with the development of Karlsruhe Main Cemetery: it identifies what gives the grounds their present identity without turning the cemetery into a purely historical attraction. A visit can focus on spatial structure and named orientation points while leaving individual graves undisturbed.
